Seeking Inspiration (Shooting Exercise #3)

So for this blog entry we had to find an artist from the Midwest Photographer's Project that inspired us in some way. I choose Jane Fulton Alt who series of work really interested me. Her images seemed to chronicle the different things that our eyes may be often drawn to or fixed on in certain situations. I'm sure we all have been in class and zoned out staring at someone's backpack or been at the grocery store and became fixed upon a random pack of gum while waiting in line, well the photos I posted are of things that I will find myself focusing on in my home.

Death of Autotune

So for the first assignment in my class we were to take pictures without our cameras on auto which for me is a frightening departure from the norm but sometimes you gotta just jump...right?!? Well here are my fave 5 from my shooting excursion. I can honestly say I didn't venture too far into the unknown in terms of settings on my camera and believe me when I did the results were not pretty but hopefully my later work will show a little more mastery of the various techniques.

So this is a photo I took a few years back. It is hands down the coolest and probably only cool photo I have ever taken but it means a lot to me. This is a picture of my living room where the band that I was in at the time used to practice. Over the years I spent many hours in my house playing drums and jamming/writing songs with different musicians in a number of places from my loft, bedroom, garage, dining room, all the way to the basement.
But even though we practiced and played in all of those spots nothing compared to the feeling of home that we got when we able to play in the living room. For some reason it sparked creativity and everything seemed to gel just a little bit better when we played in this room. My mom was always cool with us playing in the house but this room was her pride and joy so when she finally let us set up shop in there it meant a lot to us all. I enjoy this photo because it reminds me of a great time in my life where I was able to grow a lot and become really great friends with some people that I will know the rest of my life.

My name is Nicholas Hallmon and I am in ART 107 at UWM. My major is Psych and Pre-Med and while I hope to impact the health field in some shape, form, or fashion I have always been drawn to photography. I think it's one of those things where I never had a knack for being extremely creative with colors, lighting, angles etc. but when I saw a photo that had any combination of those elements executed in a unique way it would blow my mind. Photography is very intriguing to me because there is nothing else that can convey so many different feelings, emotions, thoughts, and sometimes even weave a story without...well saying anything at all. So I am taking this class to get a better understanding of the ins and outs of photography and maybe even get a little bit better at something that I could never really master on my own. I hope you guys dig what I come up with!
